One of the most dramatic results achievable in the field of facial cosmetic surgery is chin augmentation or chin implant. Unfortunately it is the one cosmetic procedure about which people know very little they rarely come in asking for a chin implant. Yet for those patients who have a receding chin without significant overbite (the lower teeth positioned well behind the upper teeth), a chin augmentation is safe, generally uncomplicated, not very painful, permanent, relatively inexpensive, and surprisingly gratifying in terms of patient satisfaction. In many cases it can be performed in conjunction with liposuction of the neck to dramatically improve the contour of the neck, eliminate double chin and even take up some of the slack in the skin of the neck where its beginning to hang.
Computer imaging is available the day of the consultation. This is a great tool to show patients the anticipated results of chin augmentation.
Chin augmentation is performed in the office under local anesthesia with minimal downtime. The surgery involves placing a silastic (solid, rubbery) implant beneath the soft tissues of the chin against the bone through a small, virtually invisible incision on the undersurface of the chin. There is very little after care needed and the few skin sutures are removed about a week following the surgery.
