Dermal fillers, injectable materials to soften skin wrinkles, folds or depressions are or soon will be a great adjunct to more invasive cosmetic procedures. Collagen is the best known of the dermal fillers, but it has the disadvantage of being very short-lived and sometimes causing allergic reaction. Newer dermal fillers such as Restylane®, Perlane, Artecol, Radiance, Hylaform, Cymentra and others have been used effectively in other countries, but many are still in the process of getting FDA approval in the United States. The bad news about dermal fillers, as they become available for use here, is that none are really permanent. But perhaps that is good news also because any irregularities that could result will be temporary; and as the face changes with age, what may look good now could become a bit unsightly or conspicuous years from now. The good news is that they are very conservative, requiring no more than injection through a tiny needle, and they are probably the best way to deal with small dents and depressions such as acne scars and minor surgical irregularities.
Of a more permanent nature are the synthetic soft tissue implants such as Soft-form or Advanta which are used more for lip enhancements, softening nasolabial folds (smile lines) and marionette lines. All this is based on circumstances, data, and product availability as it exists today. Undoubtedly in several months this information will start to become obsolete, such is the rapidity of evolution in technology, product development and medical research. In any event the appropriateness of dermal fillers and/or soft tissue implants to your facial contour and your specific goals and desires would depend on an individual consultation, evaluation and recommendations. It requires just a little inconvenience on your part but no cost, and you will leave with some very valuable information.
