Tumescent Liposuction - What is It?
Tumescent Liposuction is the use of large volumes of very dilute local anesthetic containing adrenaline to provide a safe and bloodless environment for performing liposuctions. This technique has become the method of choice for liposuction surgery.
Tumescent Liposuction - What is Recovery After?
Tumescent Liposuction leaves local anesthetic solution in the tissues resulting in MUCH greater comfort after surgery than the older techniques. This prolonged relief can be of value in cases done under general anesthesia or sedation. Once this wears off, most patients experience some discomfort that is usually easily managed with some oral medication for a few days.
You may weigh more, about the same, or less right after surgery. Some of this extra weight is from fluid used during the tumescent technique that your body will eliminate over the next day or so. Some weight will be from the fluid of tissue swelling.
How much and where these fluids are retained depends on what was done. Since there is less bruising and bleeding from tumescent liposuction, there is less blood to be absorbed and thus less irritation of the body tissues. The lack of this irritation means that the swelling goes down much faster.
After liposuction with sedation, you should eat lightly at first to avoid an upset stomach. Drinking some extra liquids will help your body adjust its fluid balance. Since there is a lot of fluid injected during tumescent liposuction, some does leak out of the tiny wounds after surgery. This is normal and should end within 2 or 3 days. Using absorbent pads or dressings to catch this liquid is an effective way to deal with this minor inconvenience.
Tumescent Liposuction results in a rapid improvement of your shape. Most of the swelling goes down in a few days but part of the result is from the contraction of tissue that has been treated. Although patients see a dramatic improvement within 7-14 days, it will take 3 to 4 months to see the final results. Tumescent Liposuction - Can I Gain Weight after Surgery?
Tumescent Liposuction removes fat cells from localized parts of the body. Some cells are left behind intentionally. If too much fat is removed, the skin will stick unnaturally to the underlying muscle and tissues. The remaining fat cells in the liposuctioned areas and elsewhere in the body can still accumulate fat if the body's caloric intake exceeds it's energy needs. The good news is that most of any additional fat gained tends to selectively deposit in areas of the body other than areas liposuctioned. The best way to avoid any additional fat accumulation is to maintain a lifestyle of dietary discretion and appropriate exercise. Liposuction can easily give you the motivation and determination to do so.
