Rhinoplasty, otherwise known as nose job, is the surgical procedure whose goal is to improve the appearance of the nose. It may or may not be associated with improving the function of the nose (e.g. opening the breathing passages on one or both sides, improving the air flow to and drainage of the sinuses and thus reducing sinus problems, reducing snoring problems, etc). Insurance may cover some or all of the functional components of nasal surgery, but not the cosmetic portions. Rhinoplasty is performed by working under the skin through internal incisions to change the structural elements (bone and cartilage) of the nose, which results in the improved appearance. Examples of common improvements that rhinoplasty can produce are a smaller or straighter nose, a reduced hump, a more defined tip, a shorter or more turned-up nose. Revision rhinoplasties can be done to correct deformities resulting from previous rhinoplasties, but the best chance for excellence in rhinoplasty, as in any other cosmetic surgery, is the first time around.
Its important to note that all rhinoplasties are not alike and shouldnt be. The nose has to fit the face and the rest of the
body. Obviously a large tall man should not have a little turned-up nose. The influence of an artistic and aesthetic sense as well as years of experience on the part of the surgeon are paramount in importance. Indeed, the difference between a mediocre rhinoplasty and a great rhinoplasty is the difference between a mechanical drawing and a finished artistic masterpiece.
Elective rhinoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia, although local anesthesia with sedation is a reasonable option. The preferred age for rhinoplasty is any age after the growth of the nose is completed, usually around 14-15 for girls and 16-17 in boys. Sometimes trauma resulting in displaced nasal fractures will make it necessary to do nasal surgery on younger children, but the goal in such instances should be more to restore rather than radically change the original nasal anatomy.
Since your nose is very prominent on your face and therefore perhaps the most noticeable structure, it is very important to select a surgeon on the basis of experience, artistry and time-tested skill rather than fees or convenience.
